NUTRACEUTICAL OMNIUM
BCCInnovation is involved in the development of the NUTRACEUTICAL OMNIUM project, aimed at creating a new company specialized in the production of nutraceuticals derived from food waste. NUTRACEUTICAL OMNIUM is a research, development, and innovation project focused on the technological development and promotion of a new business activity that aims to create value-added products (nutraceuticals) from food discards. The project is being developed by a consortium consisting of Ausolan, Eroski, Gaiker IK4, Basque Culinary Center, and ISEA.
The source of the nutraceuticals will be food waste, as the European Commission (EC) estimates that over 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted every year globally, which accounts for one-third of global food production. Of this, 89 million tons of food in good condition is wasted annually in the European Union, and 8 million tons in Spain. The EC aims to reduce food waste by 30% by 2025 compared to 2014 levels and cut it in half by 2030. Food waste is primarily linked to poor buying and consumption habits, as well as improper food management and handling.
The BCCInnovation team collaborates in this project by developing new products and incorporating nutraceuticals into food prototypes to create products based on sustainability.
The project is financially supported by the Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness of the Basque Government through the Hazitek-2019 Program.
